You will then descend for approximately 1.5 km until you reach the restored Buenavista coffee plantation buildings where the guide can explain about Cuba’s close association with coffee production and the slave trade.
A Walk to the Ruins of the Santa Serafina Coffee Plantation
Adults/children: £30 Departing from: Las Terrazas Operates: Daily Time (approx): 9.30 am Duration (approx): 4 hours Distance(approx): 6.5 km Excursion: Shared You will start the trail with a very pleasant walk through the woods alongside the picturesque San Juan river and through the valley of the same name. If time permits there might be chance for a cooling swim in the river, or at least dip your toes in the cool water. After approximately 3 km you reach the somewhat ghostly ruins of the Santa Serafina coffee plantation, built in the 19th Century by French immigrants. You then descend for a couple of kilometres to the end of the walk at the Curujey Ranch overlooking the lake.
A Walk to the Ruins of the San Idelfonso and Contento Coffee Plantations
Adults/children: £30 Departing from: Las Terrazas Operates: Daily Time (approx): 9.30 am Duration (approx): 4 hours Distance(approx): 9 km Excursion: Shared A longer walk that takes you in a meandering trail around the base of the El Taburete hill passing through some dense tropical countryside that was the training ground for Che Guevera and his soldiers as they prepared for a US invasion in the early 1960s. A very interesting walk which eventually reaches the ruins of two former coffee plantations dating back to the early 19th Century, both standing as ghostly reminders of Cuba’s links to the slave trade. After a long but fascinating walk, you will finish at the San Juan river where the chance of a cooling swim awaits!
Climb El Taburete Hill
Adults/children: £30 Departing from: Las Terrazas Operates: Daily Time (approx): 9.30 am Duration (approx): According to fitness Distance(approx): 6 km Excursion: Shared Following a forest trail, this walk takes us to the top of the Al Taburete mountain which affords excellent views across the rolling countryside of the Las Terrazas Reserve. It is on this mountain that Che Guevera spent a lot of time training and living with his fellow revolutionary soldiers as they prepared for the US backed invasion of Cuba. Reaching the summit after a couple of kilometres of steady climb, we can rest by the monument dedicated to Che Guevara and we will be at an elevation of 450 metres above sea level. The descent is on the south of the mountain where a narrow trail takes us to the San Juan river where the chance of a cooling swim awaits.
